Kelly's Corner

In the beginning of the year we moved to our new location on the 3 rd floor of 25 West 43 rd Street. Knowing that security has become a significant concern for many members, we made sure the location was outfitted with the proper alarms and cameras. We also tried to keep in mind that privacy is a very important issue and one area that we made moves to address. We believe we have succeeded in both areas.

Hopefully by now, many members are aware of our name change to Education Affiliates Federal Credit Union and how that came about. We will always remain aware of our debt to the PSC/CUNY labor union and consider them our founding fathers. We, however, wish to expand our role in the credit union movement and cover other groups in the area. This will enable us to grow and offer other and improved services.

We wanted to combine our debit and credit card programs under one umbrella to enable us to provide the opportunity for you to earn points on both programs. We also wanted to provide additional security in this time of increased criminal activity with credit cards. Unfortunately, like Murphy’s Law, What ever could go wrong, did! All the new debit cards did arrive at the post office on October 19, 2006. All the pin numbers were mailed the same day from a different location. Regrettably, not everyone received them at the appropriate time.

Another problem was activating the cards. We were stunned at the amount of incorrect home phone numbers we had on file. We did work to help activate the cards when we were contacted but I’m sure not as quickly as everyone wished.

Helpful Hints on Protecting Your ID from Identity Thieves

  1. Do not respond to urgent emails or phone calls from individuals claiming to be from the IRS, a credit card company, police or someone claiming to be a city or government agency such as the IRS or the Department of Jurors.
  2. Check your statements very carefully each month and report any discrepancies immediately.
  3. Check your credit report! You are entitled to one credit report a year from each of the credit agencies (Equifax, Experian and Trans Union). Get one report at a time every 4 months so you can carefully screen during the year what is being reported and detect any fraudulent activity.
  4. Be extra cautious shopping online. Be sure they are secured sites.
  5. Invest in a shredder! Very often thieves go through your garbage to retrieve any discarded financial information.
We wish you a happy New Year and a new beginning for us all!
